Coutinho (40′), Origi (59′)
Afobe (7′), King (87′)
After a wonderful win in Saturday’s Merseyside derby, the Reds made two changes to the team, with Divock Origi and Ragnar Klavan coming in to replace the injured Sadio Mané and Joel Matip. Daniel Sturridge also returned to the squad and was named on the bench.
A fairly chilly Wednesday night at Anfield saw Anfield pay tribute to the 96 Liverpool fans who were unlawfully killed at Hillsborough as the 1989 disaster reaches its 28th anniversary. The stadium observed a minute’s applause in recognition of the families, survivors and supporters of the campaign for justice, while the Kop held a mosaic aloft in honour of the 96.
The first half
The Reds found themselves a goal behind with just seven minutes played after efforts from both Roberto Firmino and Dejan Lovren failed to find the net. Wijnaldum’s attempted backless was seized upon by Afobe who slipped the ball past Mignolet to put the cherries ahead.
Liverpool began putting more pressure on their opponents and Origi had the opportunity to make things level but failed to adjust his feet quickly enough when King’s flick across the box at a corner fell in the direction of the unmarked striker at the back post.
Opportunities to equalise came, but Liverpool finally drew level five minutes before the break, with a goal of simplicity. Mignolet’s long kick was flicked into the path of Firmino by Origi. The Brazilian then controlled on his chest and slid a pass through for his Brazilian teammate’s run and Coutinho steered beyond Boruc.
The second half
It was just before the hour mark when the Reds finally went in front.
Coutinho’s pass forward found the run of Wijnaldum into the area, who hoisted the ball into the six-yard box, where Origi bulleted a header home from point-blank range.
Coutinho was then taken off, with reports that he was sick during the break, and was replaced with Matip.
As the game approached the 90-minute mark, the points appeared to be Liverpool’s, until King managed to hook the ball into the net after a long throw into the area.
The Reds had chances for a last-minute winner but failed to hold on to the much-needed three points. A HUGE loss, and one that could affect a top-four spot.
